Respirometry System for Measuring Biodegradation of Bio-Based Materials in Soil

Consumer Goods & Retail Packaging 2022
Biodegradation is determined by environmental factors; the rate and extent of biodegradation can be different from one environment to the other. Therefore, it is important to test the biodegradation in an environment representative of real natural conditions. International Standard test for biodegradation of plastics in soil ISO 17556 (Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability in soil by measuring the oxygen demand in a respirometer or the amount of carbon dioxide evolved) was applied both to measure biodegradation and to prepare soil samples. Measuring according to the ISO standard without using modern analytical methods can be time-consuming. By automating respirometric measurements, we can perform a large number of measurements at the same time, saving time and enabling on-line data that can be useful in the development of new materials or obtaining biodegradation certificates. With multi-channel automatic respirometry measurement systems, we can measure in different media such as compost, wastewater, sediment, and soil just by using the basic respirometry system. We will present systems and measurements of biodegradation in soil using automated measurement systems from Echo Instruments. In particular, we will focus to the preparation of soils and the preparation of samples of bioplastics.
